    Congress urged to pass easy auto safety fixes that will save kids’ lives. Child safety advocates and families whose children have been killed by vehicles in backover incidents, strangled by power windows or inadvertently knocked a vehicle into gear came to Capitol Hill today to urge Congress to pass legislation preventing these unnecessary deaths and injuries.

    According to the Centers for Disease, Control and Prevention, approximately one in 10 vehicle-related deaths of children don’t occur in traffic situations. Instead, many of these deaths occur close to home, in drive-ways or garages, in nearby parking lots, or even inside the car.

    How to turn part-time belt users into full-time users is an issue that has dogged policymakers for many years. Even though belt use is at a record 86 percent, more than half of the people who die in passenger vehicle crashes each year are unbelted.     At the recent Lifesavers Conference, I stopped by the Kids and Car Safety booth. The mission of this marvelous organization, www.KidsAndCars.org, based in Kansas, is to educate all drivers about the risks to children of driving, with “blindzones” being one of its main focuses.
