Group warns of high number of children left in stolen cars
As summer nears, Kids and Cars reports a rise in car thefts with children inside: 80 in 2020, 121 in 2021, and 265 in 2022. Director Amber Rollins urges parents to never leave children alone in cars, citing risks like overheating and choking. Missouri saw 66 such cases from 2000 to 2021. In 2023, 29 children died in hot cars; one has died in 2024.
Carjackers Steal More Cars — Many With Kids Still Inside
Last year, 264 children were left unattended in vehicles that were carjacked. Car thefts are up since 200, and so are juvenile carjackers.
Cars Stolen with Children Alone Inside
In 2022, Kids and Car Safety has documented over 200 children who were victims of being left alone inside a vehicle that was stolen with them alone inside.
Contrary to what many might believe, children taken during a car theft is not a rare occurrence. And, it happens in even the safest of neighborhoods. Cars are often stolen from gas stations and convenience store parking lots as well as from home driveways.
