This chart shows the length of the blind zone of each listed vehicle. The distance noted is how far behind the vehicle a 28-inch traffic cone had to be before the person, sitting in the driver's seat, could see its top by looking through the rear window.
Car backup camera rule delayed again by NHTSA
NHTSA has again postponed its final rule to expand rear visibility requirements in cars, in order to protect against deadly backover accidents. According to Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, regulators have made significant progress, but further research and analysis is needed, so the final standards are now anticipated by December 31, 2012.
U.S. delays phase-in of rear view safety systems on cars
Long-awaited rules aimed at helping drivers avoid unintentionally backing over children are being delayed again following complaints from automakers that requiring rearview video cameras systems on new cars and trucks would be too expensive.

Rearview cameras, such as this one on a BMW X5, are common in luxury vehicles - especially SUVs. A proposed federal regulation would essentially require them on all new vehicles has been postponed.
